CLOWN WORKSHOPS
For the past two years, I’ve began teaching beginner clown to students aged 14-18. I’ve taught clown workshops for the Soulpepper City Youth Academy, Soulpepper Summer Mixtape program and to students at Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts.
What happens in a clown workshop?
In my workshops, we study the fundamentals: presence, listening, play, audience and physicality. I will often begin the lesson with a quick overview on what ‘clown’ actually means and then we will start playing games that focus on these principles.
My workshops are focused on the individual. What is their version of clowning? How can each person access their presence? How do they realize their own comedic potential?
What is your experience in clowning?
I have studied clown over the past 7 years in many different styles. Beginning in theatre school, I studied under Joe De Paul, Yves Dagenais and later Michel Dallaire. Upon graduating, I travelled to Italy to train with Antonio Fava in Commedia Dell’ Arte for three months. When I returned to Toronto, I was awarded the Canada Council Research and Creation grant to pursue clown where I began training with Ken Hall, Isaac Kessler and became a regular performer/creator at Sweet Action Theatre, Canada’s leading clown incubator-theatre. Most recently, in the Soulpepper Academy, I trained with Leah Cherniak.
