MONKS

An interactive clown show by Annie Luján and Veronica Hortigüela

WHAT THE HECK IS MONKS!?!?

In the year 1157, in the kingdom of Alfonso VIII, a modest Spanish monastery tucked among rolling olive orchards serves as the damp and dreary home to an order of Benedictine Monks. Turn left then right then left down the cold dark hall of this ramshackle shelter and you’ll find two obedient, pious, and very very stupid simple Brothers, tasked with the mind-numbing job of counting lentils.

But when the strict old Abbott ventures into town for business (for the first time in five years), these Brothers seize the opportunity and proudly invite a wagon full of villagers to pay them a visit. Fa la la! What ensues over the next hour is a largely magical, mostly improvised, and never dull clown show full to the brim with wild risk, chaotic games, and endless opportunities for the audience to get in on the stupid.

With the bell in the tower calling out the monotonous passage of time, completing their daily work of rigorously and expertly cleaning and counting lentils devolves into a frenzy as the Brothers lose themselves in the joyful rush of meeting new friends. But when a wild, once-in-a-lifetime storm shakes them to the core, keeping the monastery standing becomes the quest of a lifetime. With the vicious winds undoing all their hard work and carrying their beloved Donkey off beyond the hills, the Brothers are forced to decide: do they get back to work, or save their precious Donkey friend?

Faced with a world that is constantly pressuring them to streamline routines and worship productivity, these Brothers discover that their greatest joy comes from doing absolutely nothing with the people they love most.

Accept their invitation and join the Monks on a journey for a good time in this shockingly dumb interactive clown show featuring magical realism, live music, unbridled chaos, and every interpretation of the word ‘ass’.
